BATHINDA: Allegedly duped by an NRI couple and their accomplices on the pretext of settling him and his wife in Canada, a resident of Kapure village in
Moga consumed poison to end his life on Wednesday.
The victim, Ranjit Singh, 35, had given Rs 30 lakh to the Canada-based couple --
Inderjit Singh and his wife
Charanjit Kaur -- for the purpose and was under depression as the couple neither got him visa for the North American nation nor returned the money.
Mehna police of Moga registered a case of abetment to suicide and cheating against Inderjit, Charanjit, Harjinder Singh and Paramjit Kaur of Kapure and
Bachan Singh of
Didarewala village.
Ranjit's wife
Kulwinder Kaur said, "In 2013, when Inderjit and Charanjit were on a visit to Kapure, they assured my husband to make arrangement to settle us in Canada. We provided them all the documents and gave Rs 30 lakh in instalments after selling some of our land and taking loan from relatives. But the couple neither took us to Canada, neither returned the money despite repeated several calls. The relatives of the NRI too conspired in cheating us."
Mehna SHO Palwinder Singh said, "After carrying out investigation, we registered a case under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC against Inderjit, Charanjit, Harjinder, Paramjit and Bachan."
