The state Department of Environmental Conservation has canceled its guided hikes in the Adirondacks on Jan. 1 due to expected bitter cold temperatures and wind chills.

The state had planned 75 First Day hikes at state parks, wildlife centers and more.

High temperatures through the weekend are forecast to be in single digits above and below zero while the low temperatures are forecast to be in teens and twenties below zero.

With the wind, temperatures will fall even further. Mount Marcy, the highest peak in the state, had a wind chill of -43 on Wednesday.

The three Region 5 hikes were set for Hadley Mountain, Poke-O-Moonshine and Willie Wildlife Marsh.

The remaining hikes across the state were still scheduled to happen as of Thursday morning. Click here for a list of hikes.

Some First Day Hikes may include snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. Many host sites will be offering refreshments, giveaways and a drawing for a 2018 annual Empire Pass.
