Jets running back Matt Forte, who might not be back with the team in 2018, said Thursday he spent a large chunk of this season "playing on one leg," due to knee swelling.
But Forte, who on Sunday will finish his 10th NFL season, said he wants to play next season and wants to return to the Jets. Forte turned 32 earlier this month.
Forte is in the second season of a three-year contract. He hasn't put up eye-popping stats with the Jets -- 1,194 rushing yards (3.7 per carry) and nine touchdowns in 26 games, plus 556 receiving yards and two touchdown catches.
"When I was healthy and got the opportunities, I think I produced at a decent level," Forte said of his time with the Jets so far. "Since the bye week [this year], I've been basically playing on one leg, so that's been tough. Obviously, that hinders your production level."
The Jets have played five games since their bye week. Forte has played in them all, and has run for just 3 yards per carry over that span.
Forte summed up his production over these two seasons by saying, "Not up to standard. Since last year, it's just been a little bit rough. Had a few nagging injuries here and there."
Forte has no more guaranteed money remaining in his contract. If he returns to the Jets next season, his salary cap figure would be $4 million. The Jets would create $3 million in cap space by cutting him, with $1 million in dead money attached.
Running backs Bilal Powell (165 carries this year) and Eli McGuire (84 carries) are under contract for next season. Forte has 103 carries this year. He has played in 12 of 15 games.
He said he hasn't spoken with the Jets yet about his status for next season. He also said he won't need surgery again on his knee. He underwent arthroscopic surgery after last season.
"There's nothing surgical that I need to have done on my knee," he said. "It's just [that] I've been running the ball for 10 years, so you have wear and tear. Joints get overworked and they swell up, and they need time to heal."
