The Kansas City Chiefs are using Week 17 to take a look to the future.

Patrick Mahomes will start against the Denver Broncos while Alex Smith rests, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday.

Kansas City (9-6) has clinched the AFC West and is locked into the No. 4 seed regardless of Sunday's result.

Mahomes was the No. 10 overall pick in April's draft after the Chiefs traded up to select him. He has yet to play in a regular-season game amid the team's playoff push.

Smith, 33, has one year remaining on his contract but said before the season that this could be his last run with the Chiefs. He leads the NFL with a 104.7 quarterback rating.
