Has next year's EastEnders Christmas storyline already been revealed?

DARK: The Branning sisters are fighting for their lives after Christmas Day

On Christmas Day, it seemed like Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) and Abi Branning (Lorna Fitzgerald) would be leaving the .

Viewers already know that both sisters will be leaving the show and when they plunged from the Queen Vic's roof, it seemed certain that was their way out.

But after Boxing Day's episode, the girls were still alive – though that could be set to change.

Right at the end, a nurse entered the waiting room and told Tanya (Jo Joyner) and Max Branning (Jake Wood) that she needed to speak to them about their daughter.

Viewers have been speculating about which of the girls will die, as the cast recently filmed funeral scenes.

Reddit user countrycousin wrote: "Looks like Abi is going to have brain damage as they were doing a bran scan, but at the moment baby is fine.

"Lauren is in trouble but I don't think it's Lauren they were about to talk about, as it wasn't the surgeon talking to Tanya."

Another, lockylive, has already started thinking about next year's big episodes following the Branning tragedy.

They wrote: "If it's both, EastEnders writers seem to be doing the same thing on Christmas now, so with any luck they'll bring back the Slaters and kill them off next year."

Last year, the Mitchell sisters were killed off and it looks like the Branning girls will be in upcoming episodes.

The soap confirmed that Kat (Jessie Wallace), Big Mo (Laila Morse) and Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) are all returning in 2018.

In fact, there are more than just a few classic characters coming back in the New Year.

It has already been revealed that Tamzin Outhwaite will return as Melanie Owen, while Maisie Smith is coming back as Tiffany Butcher.

Masood Ahmed (Nitin Ganatra) made a brief cameo recently but he will be back full time alongside two more family members.

He is moving his aunt Mariam (Indira Joshi) and uncle Arshad (Madhav Sharma) into 41 Albert Square, meaning Carmel Kazemi (Bonnie Langsford) will have to find a new place to live.

Another new character coming to Walford is Hunter Owen (Charlie Winter), the son that Mel gave birth to after leaving Albert Square.

But could any of the returning or new characters be knocked off this time next year?
