A cold, crying cat that had been stuck in a tree for a day and half was rescued by firefighters in Troy on Tuesday night, the Troy Fire Department reports.
When crews arrived at 2779 W. Wattles Road, they found a Samaritan who was trying to coax the cat out of the tree and found that the rescue mission would be “a bit trickier” because of overhead wires near the tree, according to the news release.
Firefighters set up several ladders and flood lights to illuminate the area, and were able to ascend the tree and secure the cat, which was passed down the tree to a firefighter and placed in a carrier that the Samaritan had provided.
“With the thermometer nearing zero degree temperatures outside, there was an obvious concern for the cat’s well-being,” the Troy Fire Department said in a statement.
The Troy Fire Department also made the following statement regarding the nature of the rescue:
While the TFD does not routinely respond to “cats in trees”, we maintain the view that if available, we will respond in a non-emergency manner to assist in removing pets from harm. We realize that pets are members of the family. By offering our assistance we may prevent their owners from taking unnecessary risks to themselves, and their pet, to effect a rescue attempt.
A couple concerned residents provided a carrier and blankets and offered to take care of the cat after the rescue, according to the statement. Anyone who recognizes the cat can call Troy Police at 248-524-3477.
