In a tragic incident, a six-month pregnant woman died after she was run over by a speeding truck in Outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri area on Tuesday morning. “The woman was on her way to the hospital for a routine check-up,” said a senior police officer.
The fatal accident took place outside the gate of the Sanjay Gandhi hospital when Janki Devi, the deceased had come for a routine check-up with her husband Uma Shankar on a motorcycle.
A senior police officer said that the accident took place on Tuesday morning at the main gate of the Government-run Sanjay Gandhi hospital. “A speeding truck rammed into a motorcycle. On hearing the cries of the locals and passers- by, Sub-Inspector Praveen Khatri caught hold of the errant truck driver who was trying to flee from the spot. While the woman was getting off from the motorcycle, the truck hit the bike. The truck crushed the woman. Her husband also got injured,” he said.
Police personnel rushed the couple to the hospital where the woman succumbed to her injuries while the husband continues to be critical.
Family members of the deceased said that the couple lives in the Rani Khera village and used to travel 10 kms, all the way from the home to the Sanjay Gandhi hospital to get Janki checked.
In light of the fatal accident, family members wept as “it was not just one life we lost, it was two — one of the baby, one of the mother.” The road where the accident took place is congested as vendors, e-rickshaws encroach on the road leading to traffic jams, claimed locals. “It is the fourth accident this year at the same spot,” said another local, wishing not to be named.
