"There was something in the shoe." That is how the Pakistan Foreign Office reacted to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs' revelation that Chetankul Jadhav, wife of Kulbhushan Jadhav, had her shoes confiscated when she went to Islamabad to meet her husband.

The shoes were confiscated on security grounds, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Dr Muhammad Faisal told DawnNews. While Faisal did not reveal what was the "something" that was discovered in Chetankul's shoe, sources within the Foreign Office told India Today that the footwear contained some kind of metal object.

Pakistani officials have admitted not to returning Jadhav's wife's shoes after she met the jailed Indian national on Monday. The Foreign Office also said the shoe is being examined to determine the nature of the 'metal object'.

This follows, the MEA hitting out hard at Pakistan yesterday for creating an "intimidating" atmosphere during the visit of Kulbhushan's wife and mother, Avanti, to Islamabad earlier this week.

"We note with regret that the Pakistani side conducted the meeting in a manner which violated the letter and spirit of our understandings," the MEA had said in a statement. The family members were asked to remove mangalsutra, bangles, bindi and shoes; they were also asked to change their clothes.

The MEA also said Jadhav's mother was not allowed to communicate in Marathi, her mother tongue Moreover she was repeatedly interrupted while doing so and eventually prevented from proceeding further in this regard.

Soon after the MEA statement was released, it was revealed that Avanti and Chentankul were heckled by Pakistani media persons outside the Foreign Office building in Islamabad after their 40-minute meeting with Kulbhushan.

Late last night, the Foreign Office released a statement, rejecting most of India's charges. " The Indian baseless allegations and twists, that come 24 hours later, about the visit of the wife and mother of Commander Jadhav, a convicted terrorist and spy, who has confessed to his crimes, are categorically rejected," the statement said.

"We do not wish to indulge in a meaningless battle of words. Our openness and transparency belies these allegations."
