Sony Xperia XZ2 release could bring a major update for Sony fans

Sony Xperia fans could be in for a big treat in 2018.

The Japanese technology firm looks set to release a swathe of new devices at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and they could include some radical changes.

Sony's last flagship, the Xperia XZ1, was launched back in August at the IFA technology show and was widely regarded as modest update.

There's no question that the XZ1 is an excellent phone but it has come under some criticism for lacking an edge-to-edge display and dual-lens rear camera.

Almost every other smartphone manufacturer, including OnePlus, Samsung, Apple and LG are now featuring this technology and it feels like the time is right for Sony to join to the party.

Information on the next-generation Xperia is limited but a new image from website Techie State appears to show what many Sony fans have been waiting for.

The picture is alleged to reveal the upcoming XZ2 and it appears this new smartphone could include a giant screen which covers 90 per cent of the front of the phone.

This display seems to stretch to almost every edge with only a tiny bezel at the top of the phone which houses the speaker and front-facing camera.

There's no image of the rear of the phone but rumours suggest the XZ2 will feature dual 12-megapixel rear cameras which will be able to add DSLR-style depth of field to images.

Finally it's thought the XZ2 will include a large battery and new

This new chip was announced by Qualcomm earlier this month and is expected to be around 25 to 30 per cent faster than the Snapdragon 835.

Qualcomm is also boasting that its new 845 brains will offer improved power consumption, which should result in markedly better battery life for your new smartphone.

Along with these rumoured internal specs, the leaked image appears to show Sony's trademark camera button and fingerprint scanner which are both positioned on the side of the phone.

It's worth noting that the published image is very low resolution and there's nothing to confirm that the XZ2 will look like this.

However, Sony needs to up its game with a new design if it stands any chance of taking on its Android rival.

Luckily, MWC 2017 begins on February 26 so there's not long to discover what Sony has in store.
