IT is usual for political parties to flood the press with handouts highlighting aspects they wish publicised at this time of year, but Conservative health spokesman Miles Briggs has surely committed an act of crass political opportunism with his paper on ageing nurses (“Tories warn over ageing NHS nursing staff”, The Herald, December 23).

Apart from ageing currently dominating every facet of UK life, in both the public and private sectors and elsewhere, why does he deign to assume that the relevant authorities are not aware of it, and are doing nothing to deal with the problem? After all, health boards will know about it, as will the Information Services Division of the Common Services Agency. And there is an army of civil servants beavering away on the subject, directed by government ministers at Holyrood. But those responsible for managing the NHS superannuation are at the forefront of the issue – how could it be otherwise?

If he has no faith in these bodies, what solution does he suggest?
