A Florida lawmaker thinks the FBI needs to be purged of biased agents who are working for the “deep state.”
Rep. Francis Rooney (R-Fla.) told MSNBC on Tuesday that the Department of Justice and the FBI are “off the rails.”
“I’m very concerned that the DOJ and the FBI, whether you want to call it deep state or what, are kind of off the rails,” Rooney told MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson. “I don’t want to discredit them. I just, I would like to see the directors of the agencies purge it and say, look, we’ve got a lot of great agents, a lot of great lawyers here.”
Rooney added that he had seen evidence that “the agencies don’t respect the Constitution and will not put the ends before the means.”
The attack on the nation’s top law enforcement agency came hours after President Trump made similar attacks on Twitter.
The President spent the morning tweeting about claims made by Fox News commentators about the infamous dossier that contains potentially damaging allegations about Trump's campaign and its possible connections to Russia.
Trump called the FBI “tainted.”
Meanwhile, House intelligence committee chairman Devin Nunes(R-Calif.) is working with his fellow GOPer on a report that will allege “corruption” at the FBI, according to several reports.
Nunes’ report will focus on the conduct of agents working on the federal investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election.
Republicans have stepped up their efforts to discredit the FBI and special counsel Robert Mueller in the weeks since charges were brought against former Trump administration national security adviser Michael Flynn.
The one-time Trump ally pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents and is cooperating with Mueller’s team.
Trump also ripped FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe over the weekend, tweeting about reports that he will retire soon.
McCabe worked under former FBI director James Comey, who Trump fired in May.
Trump, Nunes and other Republicans believe that Comey and other upper level officials withe FBI were too soft on Hillary Clinton while they headed investigations into her use of a private email server while Secretary of State.
