A man shot by police Sunday after he threatened two officers with a knife died of his injuries, authorities said Monday.

The man was identified as Charlie Joseph Murillo, 25. He was shot by a 28-year-old officer with eight months of service with Phoenix police after a second officer had used stun bags and a shotgun to try to stop Murillo, according to Sgt. Alan Pfohl, Phoenix police spokesman.

Police went to 16th and Yale streets, a few blocks south of Thomas Road, about 4 p.m. after a call of a man with a knife in the area, according to a Phoenix police spokesman.

When the first officer arrived, the man began beating on the officer's vehicle with a knife, Pfohl said.

The second officer arrived and ordered the man to drop the knife. When the man began to advance toward the officer, the second officer shot him with a stunbag shotgun, firing less-than-lethal rounds. Murillo continued toward the second officer, and the officer then used the weapon to strike Murillo.

Murillo turned and approached the first officer, who fired his duty weapon, Pfohl said.

Murillo was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries Sunday night, Pfohl said.

Detectives recovered a knife at the scene, Pfohl said.

The second officer at the scene was 31 years old with nine years of service, Pfohl said.

Murillo served about a year in the Arizona Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to a misconduct involving weapons charge in 2013. He was released on Dec. 16, 2014, according to the DOC website.
