New Delhi: Tottenham’s star striker Harry Kane has broken Alan Shearer’s Premier League 22-year-old record for the most Premier League goals in a calendar year.

Kane, with the help of his latest hat-trick against Southampton in the ongoing match, has now hit 39 league goals in 2017 and 56 goals for Spurs and England. Kane headed Spurs in front in the 22nd minute at Wembley to set the new record before adding to two more to his tally.

Kane’s impressive haul includes five top-flight hat-tricks and he was quickly congratulated by the man whose record he took as Shearer sent Kane a message of congratulation from his official Twitter account, saying: “You’ve had a magnificent 2017 @HKane. You deserve to hold the record of most @premierleague goals in a calendar year. Well done and keep up the good work.”

Kane, who has overall bagged 96 premier league goals, also surpassed Barcelona striker Lionel Messi for the most goals for club and country by any player in Europe’s major leagues in 2017. Messi hit 54 for Barca and Argentina this year (excluding friendlies).
