Christmas fireworks EXPLOSION horror as 39 people injured with some 'fighting for lives'

A CHRISTMAS fireworks explosion has injured 39 people with some in a “critical condition”, it has been reported.

The report did not specify if any tourists were hurt in the devastating event

The incident occurred at Cuba’s traditional Parrandas festival in the town of Remedios on Christmas Eve, according to state media.

The government’s Cubadebate news service said: "An unfortunate accident with fireworks occurred last night in Remedios.”

Cubadebate added that more than 20 people were seriously injured with some in “very grave, some less grave, and others in critical and very critical condition”.

The report did not specify if any tourists were hurt in the devastating event.

The festival in Cuba draws thousands from around the globe every year.

Official media added that the cause of the explosion is currently being investigated.

The carnival street part of Parrandas originated in the 18th century with the most famous parades taking place in Remedios.

Two of the town’s neighbourhoods typically compete to create the most stunning fireworks display.

The festival usually sees vendors and activities available, the former of which dispenses snacks such as pizza, rice and handmade toys.

Ferris wheels, carousels and boats are also part of the incredible spectacle.

Remedios is the oldest Spanish settlement in the former Las Villas province in the region - the town is now part of Villa Clara.

Isabella II of Spain, who ruled from 1833 until 1868, was the first to declare it a city.

The area is typically a 4 hour bus ride from Cuba’s capital, Havana.
