HARWINTON — State police said three people were taken to area hospitals with life-threatening injuries following a three-car crash on Route 8 north in Harwinton Monday evening.
Police earlier Monday reported that one person was killed in the crash but they later said that report was incorrect.
The crash was reported shortly after 6 p.m. Monday near the onramp to Route 8 in Harwinton. Police said one person was taken to Hartford Hospital via Life Star, one was taken to Hartford Hospital via ambulance and a third was taken to Waterbury Hospital via ambulance.
Police closed the ramp and shut down the highway to allow the helicopter to land. Traffic was diverted off Route 8 onto Route 118, and the highway was reopened around 7:40.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash with the help of the accident reconstruction team, and said there was a collision and a rollover.
Police did not say how many other people were involved in the crash or any other people sustained injuries. The crash remains under investigation.
