Indore: Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) on Monday slapped fine of Rs 500 on more than 30 people for spitting in open. Toiling hard to retain cleanest city tag, IMC is leaving no stone unturned to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in and around the city. Recently, it made provision for penalising people found to be spitting in open.

The IMC had earlier warned that action against any individual found spitting in public places would be taken from December 25 onwards. As scheduled, health officers of IMC launched the crackdown, as early in the morning, on people found to be spitting in open and thereby making the city dirty.

“Fines were realised from more than 30 persons,” said IMC media in charge GK Garothiya. He said that health officers of IMC roamed across the city and slapped fine on people found spitting in open. Among those penalised included a conductor of a city bus.

Meanwhile, municipal commissioner Manish Singh urged people not to make city dirty. He also asked people to click photo of the violators and post the same on 311 app, on the basis of which, an inquiry would be conducted and the violator would be penalised.

IMC has participated in Swachh Survey-2018 which is about to begin on January 4, 2018. Under the nationwide survey, teams of Quality Council of India (QCI) will visit the city and examine its cleanliness and hygiene status to award the rank it deserves. More than 4,000 cities in the country are participating in the survey.

Indore won the Swachh Survekshan Award in 2017 and is again up for retaining the award this year as well. “Apart from door-to-door collection of garbage, we have brought behavourial change in the citizens as well. We are hopeful of retaining the tag with solidarity from citizens,” said mayor Malini Gaud.
