SDMC introduces 'Atal Jan Aahar Yojana'; full meal thali to be served for just Rs 10 under the scheme
Taking cue from 'Amma canteen,' a concept introduced by late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has come up with a similar scheme, named - 'Atal Jan Aahar Yojana'.
This
food subsidisation programme which was launched by South Delhi's
civic body on Monday, will offer poor people a meal for Rs 10 from
the SDMC's booths during the day, according to officials.
According
to a report, the canteen will serve subsidised lunch at Delhi's six
centres that include Okhla Mandi, Matiala Chowk, Green Park/AIIMS,
Ghode wala Mandir in Raghubir Nagar, Kakraula Mor in Najafgarh and
Shalimar Bagh.
Under
the scheme, the menu will offer nutritious full meals such as puri,
chapattis, rice, rajma, vegetables, dal, chhole and halwa which will
be served from 11 am to 2 pm at the civic body's kiosks, the SDMC
said in a statement.
"The
scheme is being implemented in a phased manner. It will be expanded,
in terms of more centres and distribution timings to including dinner
as well," said by south
Delhi Mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat who
launched the scheme along with Chairman of the civic body's Standing
Committee Bhupender Gupta and Leader of Opposition Ramesh Matiala.
Ram
Paswan, a labourer, said, "You cannot find such food for Rs 10
anywhere in Delhi. We don't even mind paying Rs 20 if they maintain
the quality. Most of these schemes start off well, but slowly
deteriorate."
Earlier,
a similar scheme was also launched by the North Delhi Municipal
Corporation (NDMC) in Shalimar Bagh.
Sanjay
Bharti, a vendor at Yusuf Sarai, said, "A similar scheme was
launched by some government agency where they served food for Rs 18
near Safdarjung Hospital. I ate there often: the quality of vegetable
curry they served deteriorated. After sometime, I stopped visiting."
Rahul
Kumar, 18, who is a mechanic by profession and works at a garage near
South Delhi's Uphaar Cinema, enjoyed a meal of this scheme with his
friends at the inauguration day.
"I
read in the newspaper that the SDMC will be providing a thali for
just Rs 10. We immediately dropped our plan to go to the nearby hotel
for lunch as we end up spending around Rs 30 for a plate there,"
further adding that "the food is tasty. Nowhere you will get rice,
chhole, puri and halwa for Rs 10."
