Joe Rexrode and Jason Wolf explain how this loss to the Rams makes the Titans' NFL playoff push that much harder. Autumn Allison|USA TODAY NETWORK-Tennessee
Titans coach Mike Mularkey stepped into the postgame locker room on a disappointing Christmas Eve and delivered a simple, uplifting message to his downtrodden team, losers of three consecutive games.
Win next week at home against the Jaguars, and they’re in the playoffs.
“It’s coming down to the last game,” Mularkey said. “That’s not a bad thing.”
The Titans (8-7) can clinch their second consecutive winning season and first playoff berth since 2008 by defeating the newly crowned AFC South champion Jaguars (10-5) on New Year’s Eve at Nissan Stadium. They could even get back into the playoffs on a four-game losing streak, should the Chargers and Bills both lose next week, as well. The Chargers (8-7) host the Raiders (6-8). The Bills (8-7) visit the Dolphins (6-9). The Titans have the tiebreaker over the Chargers and Bills based on conference record.
All three games will kick off at 3:25 p.m. Central Time, the NFL announced. There will be no Sunday night game.

Tennessee will be on the road during wild card weekend, should it qualify for the postseason.
The Titans may have a strong chance of sweeping the Jaguars, who are likely to secure the third seed in the playoffs, particularly if Jacksonville rests some of its starters.
“That’s all you could ever ask, you just want a chance,” Marcus Mariota said. “You just want an opportunity. We let one slip away. We let kind of three in a row slip away. But, all you can really ask for is an opportunity. I look forward to getting back to work and doing our best to hopefully get this one.”
A victory could set up a back-to-back situation, where the Titans visit the Jags in the first round of the playoffs.
The Titans also could leap to the fifth seed with a victory, should the Ravens lose to the Bengals. Such a scenario would send the Titans to face the AFC West-champion Chiefs in a wild card game in Kansas City.
The Titans will miss the playoffs with a loss to the Jaguars and a victory by either the Chargers or Bills.
“Let’s see what happens,” Titans linebacker Derrick Morgan said. “We’re still in a position where we can get in, and once you get in, anything can happen.”
