New ASG, 4 Additional Advocates General appointed: Madras HC

A new Assistant Solicitor General and 4 Additional Advocates General have been appointed to the Madras High Court. According to a notification issued on December 21, 2017, Advocate G Karthikeyan has been appointed as the Assistant Solicitor General of India.

The notification said, “The President is pleased to engage Shri G Karthikeyan, Advocate as Assistant Solicitor General of India for the High Court of Madras at Chennai with immediate effect, for a period of three years from the date of this order or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

Enrolled as an advocate in Madras Bar in 1987, G Karthikeyan has appeared in a number of cases related to the acquisition of lands for the Krishna water project and SIPCOT projects.

Karthikeyan has also served as Additional Central Government standing counsel in 1999-2002.

On December 22, 2017, a new notification was issued announcing the appointment of P H Arvindh Pandian, K Chellapandian, Narmadha Sampath and S R Rajagopal as Additional Advocate Generals.

“The Governor of Tamil Nadu hereby appoints the following Senior Advocates/ Special Government Pleader/ Advocate as Additional Advocates General of Tamil Nadu in the High Court of Madras and its bench at Madurai, from the date of their assuming office,” the notice read.

With the appointments, the current strength of the Additional Advocates General in the Madras High Court has been increased to nine.
