What a Christmas cracker! The Queen’s choice for Sandringham table piece revealed

CHRISTMAS is a huge celebration for the Royal Family as they gather in Sandringham for three days of festivities - and the festive Christmas cracker is a well-loved tradition the Queen is rather fond of.

Royals will enjoy top-of-the-range treats as they pull the Queen’s favourite luxury crackers from Tom Smith this Christmas Day.

Boxes retailing at about £60 for a box of six at Debenhams, family members are treated with similar bespoke crackers made by the brand which has been supplying the Royal Family since the reign of King George V in 1910.

And with luxury gifts spilling out including silver keyrings, cufflinks, car chargers, and luggage tags, they will also get to enjoy the traditional gag joke and the infamous paper party crown.

Express.co.uk can reveal the Queen is a fan of finding a penny whistle in her christmas cracker - and reportedly wears her paper party crown every year.

A royal source said: “It’s always a classic design, nothing too modern or over-the-top and she loves tartan.

“They always feature the Royal Arms, but differ slightly in design every year and it’s a closely-guarded secret.”

And she also enjoys hearing a good joke or riddle pulled from the crackers.

The source added: “When she was younger she used to make up her own to amuse the rest of the family.

Christmas crackers are a long-standing British tradition

“And Prince Phillip likes to joke that he’s pulled a cracker – much to the Queen’s amusement.

“Prince Harry would always go around the table at Sandringham swapping the crackers around – making sure he placed the heaviest at his place setting. He still does it now.”

Britons will pull more than 300 million Christmas crackers this year - a homegrown tradition invented by confectioner Tom Smith in 1847 when he discovered the French custom of wrapping bonbons in a twist of tissue paper.

Smith included a love message in his early products but they enjoyed limited success until he devised a way to make his cracker pop.

Now the brand makes 74 million crackers a year after Smith was inspired to put the “snap” into his bonbon parcels when a log crackled loudly as he threw it on to the fire.

They design their products in Wales before the crackers are hand manufactured in a dedicated factory in China and distributed all around the world.

In November 2013, Tom Smith was also appointed an additional Royal Warrant to supply Christmas Wrapping Paper to the Queen for Buckingham Palace.

Val Bartley, a former employee at Tom Smith’s old Norwich headquarters, previously revealed that Royal crackers were not that much different from their usual luxury range.

She said: “We never included jewellery or pewter, by Royal request, but we frequently used pill boxes, onyx eggs, key rings and silk scarves.

“In 1981 we had to produce individual his and hers table decoration crackers for Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s wedding.

“The white and silver crackers were presented in beautiful silk-lined presentation boxes and contained cufflinks for him and a silver brooch for her.”
