Lucknow, Dec 25 (IANS) The 93rd birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was being celebrated on Monday at many places in his home state Uttar Pradesh with several functions being held, including one at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters here.

Vajpayee had long been a Lok Sabha member from Lucknow and has a long list of followers, friends and admirers in the state.

Party General Secretary Vijay Bahadur Pathak said that all BJP state office bearers, at different levels were celebrating Vajpayee's birthday, which the BJP observes as "Sushasan Diwas" (Good Governance Day).

At many places, poetry recitations were organized to mark Vajpayee's poetic side. The Lucknow city unit of the BJP organized a 'tehri bhoj' which was attended, among others, by senior party leader and Vajpayee's close aide, Lalji Tandon, his son and Medical Education Minister Ashutosh Tandon, Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma and Tourism Minister Rita Bahuguna Joshi.
