According to the survey, 90 per cent of cab drivers were never checked by their employers for drunk driving. The survey conducted between 2pm and 1am also brought to light the fact that 62.1 per cent of the drivers consumed alcohol in their vehicles.
While most of the drivers claim drinking in the waiting period, majority of them admit the rise in consumption was because of the long working hours. Suresh (name changed), a cab driver said, "We are left with a little off time, so we resort to drinking while on job."
Road safety expert and CADD founder Prince Singhal said, "The research was conducted at 50 prominent public locations of Delhi including airports, railway stations, Metro stations, malls, commercial hubs, office complexes and university areas. Over 893 out of the 10,000 were drivers of black-and-yellow taxis and 9,107 were cab drivers of radio and app-based cabs."
The findings raise a major question on the safety of female passengers also poses serious questions to the increasing drunk-driving cases in the capital.
