Holy Christmas being observed

DHAKA: The Christian community across the country is celebrating the holy Christmas on Monday (December 25) commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ amid festivity and religious fervor.

It is the biggest religious festival for Christian community around the globe. It is also the celebration of a rebirth through the teachings of Jesus Christ- forgiveness and peace.  

To mark the day, Christians will offer special prayers, illuminate churches, decorate Christmas trees at homes and places of worships and missions.

The day is a public holiday.

Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private television channels will air special programs while national dailies and online news portals will publish special writings marking the day.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued messages greeting the Christians of the country on the eve of the day.

President Hamid called for further consolidating the tradition of religious harmony in the country. Jesus Christ had invited the derailed people to the path of truth and justice, he also said.

The path of salvation lies in love, services, forgiveness, compassion and sympathy, added the President.

Prime Minister, in her message, urged the people irrespective of caste, creed and religion to come forward to expedite the development activities in the country.

"Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony. People of all classes are enjoying full freedom in exercising their respective religious activities," the Premier added.

Sheikh Hasina hoped that the Christmas will further strengthen the relations between the Christians and the people of other communities.

Relatively elder people of the community attired in the outfit of Santa Claus would make fun with children and distribute gifts as part of a universal Christian practice.

Different renowned hotels in the city are going to organize functions marking the day.
