Rangers transfer news: McLean and Murphy January deals, Pena's future, will Dalcio leave?

RANGERS transfer special - what’s happening at Ibrox next month?

Graeme MurtyGETTY

Graeme Murty has been appointed Rangers manager until the end of the season

It’s been a strange six months at Rangers with Pedro Caixinha given the backing for a huge overhaul in the summer only to be binned in October.

It was eventful with the Europa League shambles, another Old Firm embarrassment and then the Portuguese eventually getting the bullet.

But the fact Rangers were without a manager for three months shows how bungled this whole operation has been.

They approached Derek McInnes only for him to say no leaving Rangers out of luck - and options.

And then Graeme Murray was given the gig full time.

Time for Mark Allen to prove his worth...

What do Rangers needs in January?

Well now the manager’s in they can actually start to look forward.

The Caixinha experiment has left Rangers in all sorts of bother and without much balance.

Murty is likely to want another striker to help 21-year-old Alfredo Morelos and with Kenny Miller out injured, another creative wide player, possibly a central midfielder and at least one defender - maybe two.

Declan John has already been signed on a permanent deal despite only showing flashes of promise.

Who should Rangers sign in January?

Well, with Louis Moult agreeing a move to Preston Rangers look a bit stuck again. He’d have been perfect and reasonably cheap.

In midfield Kenny McLean is an upgrade worth taking with his contract up in six months - he could take Jason Holt’s role in the side and offer the potential for a neat partnership with former team-mate Ryan Jack.

Jamie Walker is another obvious one after the failed move in the summer and his contract running down while Jamie Murphy has also been linked.

But Walker is on Wigan’s radar and Rangers would need to move as soon as the window opens.

At the back it depends on David Bates and Fabio Cardoso and if they can offer enough back up for Bruno Alves and Danny Wilson for the rest of the season, but ideally another centre-back and back up at right back would come in - although the summer is more likely for those positions.

A loan deal for a striker not getting a game for a top side in England would be worth a punt until the end of the season, someone like James Wilson from Manchester United.

Who will Rangers probably sign in January?

There’s a good chance of the deal for McLean being done - it’s just whether he makes the move in January or the summer.

Maybe another loanee from Manchester City to keep Aaron Nemane company…

Will Rangers lose anyone in January?

Dalcio will surely head back to Benfica and Eduardo Herrera could be back off to Mexico. Nemane might head back to City.

Alves has said he could go if his Portugal place for the World Cup is under threat - but now he’s back in the team that looks unlikely. Maybe Lee Hodson if he can be upgraded.

Carlos Pena’s future is uncertain he was an unused substitute again on Saturday in the defeat to Kilmarnock.

Who do Rangers need to get rid of?

Herrera and Niko Kranjcar would clear up good money in wages while Dalcio and Nemane have made no impact.

Hodson if an upgrade is available. Pena’s goal threat means he’s definitely worth keeping around but his playing time over the last few weeks suggest Murty isn’t sold on him.
