Jamaica and Dominican Republic sign tourism MOU

Jamaica and the Dominican Republic have signed a multi-destination Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will focus on joint marketing and airlifting arrangements between both countries which allow for the ease of travelling between destinations.

The signing took place at the Jewel Grande Montego Bay Resort and Spa in Rose Hall, St James.

“This is a special moment for us in Caribbean tourism,” said tourism minister, Edmund Bartlett. “This is the second MOU between two of the four major partners in the Caribbean. A few months ago, we signed an MOU with Cuba for multi-destination tourism to focus on joint marketing and airlift arrangements. Today we sign with the Dominican Republic, the largest tourism destination in the Caribbean at this time,” Bartlett added.

Multi-destination and airlifting arrangements allow for passengers to visit more than one country during the same vacation period through affordable fares and limited restrictions.

“The infrastructure in the Dominican Republic allows for connectivity with far-away markets and destinations which we are not able to access at this time. But because of this collaboration which is carving a new architecture in Caribbean tourism, we have been able to look at things which we have, and those that we don’t have and marry them and create a sufficient industry for all,” the minister explained.

Bartlett said there would be a signing of a similar agreement with Mexico in January 2018.
