COIMBATORE: A 60-year-old man was arrested for murdering his 36-year-old son-in-law over a family dispute near Perur, on the outskirts of the city, on Sunday morning.

The deceased was identified as C Mayan of Karadimadai near Perur. "He was a labourer. He had married Kavitha, daughter of C Vellingiri, about 15 years ago. The couple has two sons. Kavitha was also working a labourer. Vellingiri, who was also a labourer, was staying in a rented house at Karadimadai with his wife Chinnakkal. Mayan, who was an alcoholic, often fought with Kavitha and harassed her physically and mentally. Unable to bear the torture, she had left for her parent's house a few days ago along with her sons," a police officer said.

On Sunday morning, Mayan, who had gone to an isolated place to attend nature's call, noticed Vellingiri. "He requested his father-in-law to send Kavitha with him and assured him that he will take care of her. However, Vellingiri refused and had a quarrel with Mayan. In the heat of the moment, Mayan took out a knife and tried to stab Vellingiri. Vellingiri snatched the knife and stabbed Mayan on his neck," the officer said.

Local residents rushed Mayan to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him as brought dead.

Perur police registered a case against Vellingiri under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested him. Further investigation is on.
