Silent Night has topped a new list of the most covered and recorded Christmas tunes of all time.
Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr’s popular 19th century carol appears on many of this year’s crop of celebrity Christmas albums, extending the tune’s run as the No. 1 most-covered track on Music Reports’ festive list.
Researchers at the advanced rights administration platform have compiled a list of the 30 most-recorded holiday songs, using their huge database, and Silent Night has beaten out Irving Berlin’s White Christmas for the top spot, with 137,315 official versions.
White Christmas, which was most famously crooned by Bing Crosby and inspired a festive film of the same name, comes in second with 128,276 covers to date.
Jingle Bells is third, while The Christmas Song and Winter Wonderland come in fourth and fifth place.
Impressively, Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You rounds out the top 30 countdown, with 13,419 recorded versions since the song’s debut in 1994.
