A Long Island mom is dead and her young daughter critically injured after a motorist struck both of them as they crossed a Suffolk County street Saturday.
Myshirra High-Cortes, 31, and her 7-year-old daughter Jayla Cortes, both of Brentwood, were crossing Horseblock Road in Yaphank when a Hyundai Elantra hit them both about 5:05 p.m., Suffolk County police said Sunday.
Medics took both mother and daughter to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue. High-Cortes couldn’t be saved, while Jayla remained hospitalized in critical condition Sunday night, police said.
The 60-year-old driver remained at the scene. She has not been charged criminally.

High-Cortes’ friends and family flooded her Facebook page with messages of grief and condolences Sunday night.
One Facebook user, Sunnie Baker, wrote that High-Cortes was out Christmas shopping for her daughters when she was struck.
“She leaves behind a 10yr old daughter who we still need to bring joy to on Christmas day,” Baker wrote, making an appeal for donations for her family.
Another Facebook user, Christina Anthony, wrote, “I can't even wrap my head around this right now. Jayla continue to fight baby girl your family loves you both. God bless my family and be with us during this time of need.”
