City may get Rs 5cr to revamp Avinashi Rd

Coimbatore: The city will soon get a better traffic management system if the traffic police department's proposal seeking Rs 5cr under the road safety fund from the transport department is approved.
With focus on Avinashi Road, which is the deadliest of the stretches in the city, the traffic department wants to refurbish the centre medians, put up sign boards, set up zebra crossing and take up other measures to minimise accidents.

"The proposal mainly contains the reasons for various accidents and what can be done to reduce them. Many suggestions from general public were also included," said deputy commissioner of traffic department Sujith Kumar.

At several locations on Avinashi Road, pedestrians do not have any space to cross the road. "Most of the time, people try to jump over the medians or run to the junctions, leading to accidents. In order to avoid such incidents, we have decided to provide a crossing space at every 200m, wherever shops and markets are located," Sujith Kumar told TOI. A detailed survey was conducted to prepare the proposal, he said.

Avinashi Road was chosen as over 35% of fatal accidents in the city occurred at night on the stretch and most of the vehicles involved were speeding. "We are hopeful that the funds would be released, after which, we will begin the work and ensure that the number of accidents is reduced," said Sujith Kumar. "Though several junctions have speed breakers, sign boards have not been installed to indicate their presence. At such locations, we will put up sign boards. Sign boards will also be set up before schools and colleges," he added.

"Almost every week, a fatal accident takes place here. So, this is a much needed move," said Rajesh R, a regular commuter.
