NEW DELHI: "I hope Congress leaders won't claim a 'moral victory' even today", BJP president Amit Shah today took a swipe at Congress following the announcement of bypoll results for five constituencies — BJP won three seats, while Congress lost on all the four seats it contested.

Shah was referring to an earlier remark by Congress where they had called the results of Gujarat assembly elections "a moral victory for the party".

"Whatever the results, it was a moral win for Congress. It was a win for Rahul ji's issue-based campaign. BJP in the home state of PM Modi ji and Amit Shah ji is struggling to cross even 100", Congress leader Ashok Gehlot had said following the announcement of the Gujarat assembly election results.

The Gujarat assembly elections results were announced on December 18, with Congress securing 77 of the total 182 seats in the state assembly. BJP secured the majority with 99 seats.

Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani joined the attack and called the bypoll results a verdict on Rahul Gandhi's performance as party's president.

Today, results were announced for five assembly seats, which had gone to polls earlier this year. While BJP won three seats — Sikandra (Uttar Pradesh), Pakke-Kessang (Arunachal Pradesh) and Likabali (Arunachal Pradesh), it lost West Bengal's Sabang and Tamil Nadu's RK Nagar constituencies.

Following the results, both, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah congratulated the party workers for the victories.

The BJP president said that the win in the eastern state is an "appreciation of central government's 'Act East Policy'."

The Prime Minister congratulated the party members in West Bengal and appreciated the rise in BJP's share of the vote in the constituency.

BJP lost West Bengal's Sabang seat to TMC by a margin of 64,192 votes. Party candidate, Antara Bhattacharyya, was in the third spot with 37,476 votes. In the 2016 assembly polls, the party had secured a mere 5,000 votes.
