Patrice Bergeron scored twice in the third period, helping the host Boston Bruins beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 on Saturday for their fourth straight victory.
Brad Marchand had a goal and two assists and Tuukka Rask finished with 30 saves for Boston, which has won seven of nine overall. David Pastrnak and David Backes each had two assists.
Frans Nielsen scored Detroit’s goal and Jimmy Howard stopped 23 shots for the Red Wings, who lost despite outshooting Boston 31-25.
The game was tied at 1 when Bergeron scored his ninth of the season at 6:11 of the third on a one-timer Howard never saw. Marchand set up Bergeron’s shot from the left circle with a pass across the slot for his 198th career assist.
Down 2-1 in the final minutes, Detroit missed an opportunity to get Howard off the ice for an extra skater by icing the puck with 1:25 remaining. Howard made it to the bench with about 1:10 left and the Bruins needed a big save by Rask with 28 seconds remaining.
After a timeout, Marchand and Backes got the puck to Bergeron from just across center ice for the empty-netter.
Islanders 5, Jets 2: Mathew Barzal scored three times and Jaroslav Halak made 38 saves for host New York. The 20-year-old Barzal scored twice in the first period after Anders Lee got New York on the board 1:31 into the game. Barzal finished his first career hat trick with his 12th goal at 11:22 of the third. The Islanders had dropped two in a row and four of five. Defense has been an issue of late, with New York allowing three or more goals in 10 of its first 11 games this month. But Halak was able to smother the high-flying Jets. He allowed a first-period goal to rookie defenseman Tucker Poolman and a third-period score by Adam Lowry while improving to 10-8-2 on the season.
Friday night’s games
Coyotes 3, Capitals 2: Clayton Keller scored 4:33 into overtime, and Arizona rallied at home to beat Washington. Arizona, which had lost seven in a row and 10 of 11, tied the score on Christian Fischer’s goal with 1:01 remaining in regulation. Max Domi set up Keller’s winner, skating in from the left side and deking a defender with a swooping move toward the middle. Goalie Philipp Grubauer stopped Domi’s shot, but Keller jumped on the rebound for his team-leading 13th goal. Keller’s goal capped an impressive OT for the Coyotes, who dominated the possession and limited the chances for the Capitals.
Panthers 4, Wild 2: Jonathan Huberdeau scored two goals, James Reimer made 29 saves and Florida beat visiting Minnesota. Vincent Trocheck and Connor Brickley also scored for the Panthers, and Aleksander Barkov had two assists. Minnesota dropped to 1-2 on its four-game trip. Ryan Suter and Daniel Winnik scored for the Wild, and Alex Stalock stopped 30 shots.
Sabres 4, Flyers 2: Evander Kane had a goal and an assist, and host Buffalo earned its fourth win in its past 20 games. Jack Eichel added two empty-netters, helping Buffalo hold on after Philadelphia scored twice in the final 2:10. Ryan O’Reilly also scored for the Sabres. Robin Lehner stopped 33 shots. He was working on his second shutout of the season before Michael Raffl scored a power-play goal to cut Buffalo’s lead to 2-1. Shayne Gostisbehere scored for the Flyers on a one-timer with 32 seconds left, but Eichel sealed the win by scoring with 1 second remaining.
Canadiens 3, Flames 2: Byron Froese scored for the first time in 22 months and had an assist to help Montreal beat host Calgary. Nicholas Deslauriers and Brendan Gallagher also scored and Carey Price made 21 saves in his 12th straight start since returning from a lower-body injury. The Canadiens are 8-3-1 since Price returned.
