Wintry mix possible for Christmas morning

Though Sunday's sunny skies will be an improvement, there could be snow in some areas before midnight and Christmas morning could bring a mix of rain and snow, according to the National Weather Service.

High temperatures on Sunday are expected to reach 38 degrees, with light winds in the Providence area. There is a chance of snow before midnight Sunday night, along with rain and sleet, with light winds gusting as high as 21 mph, the weather service says.

Rain is likely on Christmas day for 10 a.m., a brief chance of snow by noon, then becoming gradually clearer and mostly sunny by the afternoon. Highs will be near 37 degrees, with light winds that could gust as high as 39 mph, the weather service says.

"A fast moving developing coastal low will bring accumulating snow to the region mainly northwest of the Boston to Providence corridor late Sunday night into Christmas morning, but mainly rain [is] expected along and southeast of that region," the weather service says in its forecast discussion.

A wind advisory for interior areas has been issued from about 1 to 7 p.m. on Christmas day, with 15 to 20 mph winds, gusting to 45. There is the potential for downed tree limbs and branches, along with isolated power  outages, the weather service says.

Arctic air predominates the rest of the week, though skies will be mostly clear, daytime highs in the mid 20s on Tuesday and Wednesday, and temperatures in the single digits at night.
