BERHAMPUR: Despite wildlife officials claiming to have taken measures to prevent poaching on the Chilika Lake, hunting of migratory birds seems to be going on unabated at the lagoon this winter. Wildlife personnel on Saturday arrested two teenagers near Bhusandapur under the Tangi Wildlife Range for poaching and seized four dead birds of two species from them.

The accused, aged about 17, are from the Tentuliapada area. "They were killing migratory birds by poisoning them," said divisional forest officer, Chilika wildlife division, Bikash Ranjan Das. The carcasses - those of three purple moorhens and one jacana - have been seized, added Das.

In the past one month, at least four bird poachers have been arrested from the lake's vicinity. Three cases have been registered, a source said.
