NAGPUR: "Interest is entirely a personal aspect taken up by an individual, inculcated with time as it brings pleasure and satisfaction. We might be born with 'Abhivyakti' (expression) but 'abhiruchi' (interest) is something that develops in stages of life. Both are two sides of the same coin, called freedom", said editor of 'Menka' publication,
Sujata Deshmukh at a
Madhukar Katarkar Smruti elocution series organized by Abhivyakti Vaidarbhiya Lekhika Sanstha on Friday. Devendra Gawande, resident editor of 'Loksatta' presided over.
Deshmukh, who is a
Sahitya Academy awardee, briefed the audience about the topic 'Social media: Expression and interest'. Making her point about the change in style of expressing feelings, she said, "Modern technology has drastically changed the style of expressing one's feelings. It has inculcated a habit of getting into unnecessary information of one's life through Facebook, twitter, etc. People have started updating the society with every inch of change in their lives via social media."
Deshmukh emphasized on the effects of smartphones in the routine. "It won't be an overstatement if we call smartphones as one's external sub-organ to which he/she is not just addicted but obsessed too," she added.
To highlight the idea of expression of attire, Deshmukh narrated asimple explanation given by Roselli which describes two sects of people. "Those who wear stitched clothes — are possessed solitude and unclarified thinking whereas those who wear plated outfits like sarees, lungi are creative and have clear mindset with a level of adaptability. Expression and interest are closely intertwined with art and culture", she said.
Further elaborating the pros and cons of social media, Deshmukh concluded her speech on a neutral note. "It would be stupid if one denies to join social media and communities because that platform is all muddled with chaos. Eventually, fed up with the isolation, you will be compelled to use the social media in a wrong way. So, it is better to know our own interests and maturity and use social media as per the need for expression and interest," she said.
