What's a party without a disc jockey? While Coimbatore has been growing as a party destination, a new crop of DJs based in the city are emerging into the party scene.
DJs used to be brought in from cities like Chennai and Mumbai to Coimabtore till a decade ago. Now, parties in the city increasingly feature city-based DJs. Local DJs expect this New Year to be more vibrant with more parties happening across the city.
The musical taste of city residents is also growing wider and inclusive, said DJ Prince, a popular DJ. "When we started out, people wanted more of Tamil cinema music and Dappan Koothu songs. Later, they got attuned to Bollywood tracks. Now, city residents shake a leg to all genres of music, be it English commercial, electronic dance music, rock or retro. Many of them are fans of Dutch DJ Tiesto and Dutch electro house DJ Hardwell," he told TOI.
The growth of nightlife in the city is also encouraging, Prince said. "People now promote DJ events on social media. Many turn up at DJ nights. As a result, DJs in the city are very busy," he said.
DJ Brett Tanner, the in-house DJ at 'Bike and Barrel', said his audience demand mainstream to pop to Bollywood. "DJ parties usually start off with retro or Bollywood tracks and sign of with EDM," he added.
