Fate of RK Nagar constituency and candidates will be decided today
While it is a prestige issue for the ruling AIADMK to win from the seat vacated by its supremo J Jayalalithaa and a chance for EPS-OPS, the chief minister and deputy CM, respectively, to establish their leadership, the main opposition DMK views this by-election as the first step in its 'journey to come back to power'.
For Dhinakaran, victory in this by-poll will 'prove that he is the real political heir of Jayalalithaa' and it will also be a 'lesson to Palaniswami and Panneerselvam', who, according to him, cheated the party, him and his aunt, the expelled AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala.
The Queen Mary's College, where the counting will take place, is resembling a fortress of security, and a three-tier vigil is in place by the state police and paramilitary personnel. Those with a valid ID card will only be allowed inside, that too only after thorough scrutiny.
To avoid any untoward incidents during and after counting, the entire area around the college has been brought under vigil. Also, security has been tightened in other parts of the city too.
