New Delhi, Dec 24: An undertrial prisoner allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a blanket from the grilles in cell number 5 of Tihar jail on Saturday. The suicide was reportedly noticed by a warden who had gone to take roll call of prisoners. The jail officials informed police that the deceased identified as Soniram was absolutely normal and had met a family member and a lawyer couple of weeks ago.
Following the incident, ASI Rajender visited the spot and initiated proceedings under Section 176 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). The exact reason behind his extreme step was not yet known since no suicide note was found from the spot, the police said, adding that inquest proceedings were underway.
Soniram was jailed under Case FIR No. 02/17 U/s 392/394/397/411/34 IPC and 27 Arms Act, under the jurisdiction of Kashmiri Gate police station.
His family members have been informed and the body has been seen for an autopsy at Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital, a Times of India report said. Soniram’s father is a part-time labourer. Police officers informed that daily that the deceased was lured into crime in the hopes of earning more.
