GUWAHATI: A 13-year-old girl who was allegedly gang-raped in the Rangapani area near Boko in Kamrup district last week succumbed to her injuries at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital here on Saturday.

The girl was allegedly gang-raped by three locals on December 14 and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. One person has been arrested in the case so far.

"She (the victim) was found lying in unconscious state at home. Though her family members admitted her to the primary health centre, police were not intimated about the incident. It was only after she was taken to the hospital that police came to know about the incident. Police are investigating the matter and one person has been arrested," a police officer said. An FIR was lodged at Sontoli police outpost two days after the incident.

Police said they are yet to receive the medical report which confirms that the victim was sexually assaulted. "Investigation is on. We are not in a position to confirm it," an investigating officer said.

The victim was allegedly raped inside her house when her parents were away and was left to die. The following day, she was found in a critical condition and immediately rushed to the nearby health centre, which did not report it to police. The victim's family alleged that she did not receive urgent medical treatment because she was from an economically disadvantaged background. Hospital authorities, however, refuted the charges.
