Joan Walsh will be taking her political commentary to CNN after 12 years at MSNBC, the analyst announced Saturday night on Twitter.
MSNBC decided not to renew her contract as a paid contributor, news Walsh says she learned Friday while baking pies with her daughter, who is home for the Christmas holiday weekend. The announcement caused an uproar on social media, where friends and associates of the former national affairs correspondent for The Nation and editor in chief of Salon sparked the trending hashtag #KeepJoanWalsh.
"I am overwhelmed by the support I've received today from all of you. And I'm thrilled to tell you I'll be heading to CNN in the new year," Walsh tweeted. "Thanks to everyone who made this happen. A Christmas miracle."
MSNBC, which says the paid-contributor list is reviewed annually and indicated the decision not to renew Walsh's contract was made based on the network’s budget and a desire to keep a diverse set of voices on the air, called Walsh "a key voice" who's "absolutely still welcome."
MSNBC Chris Hayes and Joy Reid were among those to lend their support for Walsh on Twitter, along with dozens of other journalists who recalled Walsh's sharp commentary and willingness to mentor young talent.
Walsh tweeted her appreciation for supporters, expressing her gratitude and excitement at starting with CNN.
"TFW (That feeling when) you stay up until 3:30 a.m. trying to thank everyone who helped you today, and you have to pick it up in the morning. I have a lot to pay forward right now," she said.
