GHAZIABAD: Six persons were arrested on Sunday for allegedly robbing the
house of a BSP activist, Amit Garg, in Nehru Nagar area on November 8. The robbers had taken Garg's wife, Meenu (39), at gunpoint and escaped with cash and jewellery after tying her up in a washroom.
The arrested include the main accused Arun, who used to work in a boutique above Garg's ground floor residence nearly three years ago, and Arun's brother-in-law
Sonu Tyagi. The gang also includes a BCA student of HRIT College in Ghaziabad, identified as Jatin. Another accused, Ankit, was a polytechnic student who had dropped out of studies.
"We have recovered 90% of the robbed cash and jewellery which would amount to nearly Rs 35 lakh. A Modinagar-based jeweller, Dinesh Verma, is also among the six persons who have been arrested. Verma had purchased the jewellery from the gang after the
robbery. Apart from the jewellery, Rs 25,000 in cash has also been recovered from them," said SSP Hari Narayan Singh.
After the robbery, the police had circulated the CCTV images of the accused on social media, which had been captured on the day of the incident. Police said the footage was instrumental in tracking the whereabouts of the accused.
Garg is known to be a close confidante of former BSP MLA Suresh Bansal. The robbers had allegedly pricked a needle-like object into one of Meenu's arms after tying her up as a result of which she had lost consciousness.
"One of the accused had inserted a needle into her arm only with the intention to scare her. A bullet motorcycle used by two of the accused, Asif and Sonu, to conduct a recce of the area a few days before the incident has been seized," said Singh.
Sonu Tyagi has criminal history and is an accused in around six cases of loot lodged in Sihani Gate police station besides a case pertaining to theft in Mayur Vihar of Delhi.
