Major fire breaks out at biscuit godown in Zirakpur

ZIRAKPUR: Major fire broke out in a parle godown in Zirakpur on Sunday noon. Over 13 fire tenders from tricity, air force station Chandigarh and its nearby cities came and took over the fire in over 6 hours operation.

The fire took place in the godown which is spread in over 50,000 square foot area in the middle of the residential as well as other godowns at around 12 noon. The godown was carrying the parle products including biscuits, toffee and other parle products.

Godown workers evacuated soon after they found fire in one of the block of godown and dialed the fire emergency number. A fire tender came to the spot from Dera Bassi immediately and called for more help to its centre and an alarm to nearby fire stations of tricity was also raised by the Dera Bassi fire station.

Fire tenders were called from Rajpura, Dappar, Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and air force station and defence personnel came for the help. A total of 13 fire tenders managed to control the fire in over six hour operation.

Fire station officials told TOI that the entire godown is full of biscuits and the biscuits are soaking the water which took more efforts for them to stop the fire.

Godown was located next to a chemical godown and fire station officials also sprayed water on the floor and walls of the chemical godown to avoid it from catching fire. The incident place was located few meters inside the Zirakpur over bridge and next to the start of the residential area of Zirakpur.

Wall on the boundary of the Parle godown fell down due to the fire and the roof made of tin of the entire godown also collapsed.


Fire station officer, Manjit Singh, "Major fire is under control. Tin shed on the entire rooftop of godown collapsed and water is not passing through the tin. JCB machines has been called to remove the collapsed tin shed and debris. The place will be made clear within night."


Over 40 rounds in total were taken by the 13 fire tenders to stop the fire till now.


However, as per the godown manager, they informed that goods worth Rs 10 crore was lying in the godown which turned into ashes. Owner of the godown refused to comment.
