TV tonight: ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ and ‘A Christmas Story’ (without music)

If that live production on Fox, got you down, no worries: The original classic is back

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, Larry Simms, Jimmy Hawkins, James Stewart, Donna Reed, Karolyn Grimes, 1946
NBC
Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed and company return in “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

TV picks for Sunday, Dec. 24

WATCH THIS:

“A Christmas Carol” (7:30 p.m., AMC): It’s the 1984 version of Charles Dickens’ classic, featuring the great George C. Scott in the role of grouchy miser Ebenezer Scrooge. (Bah Humbug! Who’s the best Scrooge on film and TV?)

“It’s a Wonderful Life” (8 p.m., NBC): Frank Capra’s feel-good classic returns for another airing, and you know the drill: Every time you watch it, an angel gets his wings … or a TV executive gets a raise … Or something like that.

“A Christmas Story” marathon (8 p.m., TBS):  OK, so maybe Fox’s live musical version of Jean Shepherd’s holiday standard didn’t rock your world. No worries. The original 1983 film gets the around-the-clock treatment again, and we triple-dog dare you to watch it for all 24 hours.

“Last Tango in Halifax Holiday Special” (8 p.m., PBS): In the conclusion, Caroline tells Gillian the truth about why she took the new headship. Gillian’s mounting guilt over Eddie’s death drives her to make a major decision. And on the night of Celia’s play, a twist of fate means Alan is forced to confront his fears.
