Jets Grades and Extra Points: Abysmal offense struggles in loss

The Jets lost their final home game of 2017 Sunday at MetLife Stadium, 14-7, to the Chargers. They've now dropped eight of their past 10.

Here are grades and extras from the Christmas Eve contest.

OFFENSE: F

Bryce Petty started for the second straight week and struggled mightily with his accuracy again. The offensive line produced 197 rushing yards despite missing two starters. But seven points isn't going to win you any games.

DEFENSE: B+

This loss isn't on the defense. The unit could have done a better job defending tight end Antonio Gates, but the secondary limited Pro Bowl wide receiver Keenan Allen and stopped the run. They did enough to win. The offense did not.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A-

This grade would have been much worse if a fourth-quarter punt return touchdown from Travis Benjamin wasn't called back for holding. The Jets executed an onside kick on the opening kick off. Lachlan Edward pinned five of his nine punts inside the 20.

TURNING POINT

The Jets faced a 4th-and-7 from the Chargers' 17-yard line with just more than three minutes remaining, down seven points. Petty got a one-on-one matchup with Robby Anderson on the outside - the exact look he wanted - but the throw was way off. Los Angeles took over on downs and ran the clock down to 15 seconds.

COACH'S CALL

Despite Petty's poor play, Todd Bowles said he never even considered playing backup Christian Hackenberg. Was this the right decision?

QUOTE

"He's not bad. Bryce is the backup quarterback. He won it in the summer. You put the backup in. You don't put a three over a two. Christian is not that bad. Bryce did not have a decent ball game. It's only his second start. I'm not going to sit here and condemn the guy because he didn't play well in week two of starting this year after not playing all year. I'm not just going to jump a guy in that hasn't played all year and put him up there, either." - Bowles on not playing Hackenberg
