MUNGER: A four-member team of Central Bureau of Investigation (
CBI) on Saturday raided the residence of the suspended postmaster of ND Road sub-post office, Talat Sultana, for alleged embezzlement of over Rs 95 lakh.
Although the probe team declined to comment in the case, sources said the embezzlement surfaced early this year and the superintendent of post offices for Munger division JP Singh ordered an inquiry in the matter on July 28 by constituting a five-member team of senior postal officials under him. The probe team submitted its report to the postmaster general (Bihar circle) on September 2. CBI sources said only the headquarters in Delhi can share the details of the raid.
"The report mentioned that the accused postmaster employed Sunny Kumar and Gautam Kumar of Basudeopur locality as computer operators in her private capacity to maintain accounts of the savings bank depositors as she could not operate computer. Sunny and Gautam managed to withdraw money time to time from the saving accounts of the depositors using the Sultana's user ID.
It also mentions that Sunny in course of time, collected user IDs of postmasters of different sub-post offices of Munger division in good faith and continued the embezzlement. It surfaced only when an old woman of Ghoshitola complained that the money deposited in her savings account had been withdrawn by someone else without her knowledge, said a source adding it also came to light that more than Rs 95 lakh was embezzled.
