Detectives have cordoned off a road in Newcastle city centre.

Officers have closed off Fenkle Street in Newcastle, close to the 02 Academy, while investigations are being carried out.

Northumbria Police has refused to disclose the exact nature of the incident.

The force initially sealed off Clayton Street, between the junctions of Westgate Road and Fenkle Street, i n the early hours of Sunday morning.

At around 4.30am, Northumbria Police tweeted: “Clayton Street, Newcastle has re-opened. Fenkle Street remains closed. Please be patient and avoid the area if you can.”

Five hours later, the street remained sealed off and three police vans were at the scene.

An officer said they were investigating a “minor incident”.
