AAA offers winter driving tips to Ohio Valley motorists
WHEELING, W Va. - We all know driving in the winter can be difficult.
Along with the cold temperatures, come slippery roads.
That's why AAA East Central is encouraging drivers to plan ahead for safe driving.
A few tips include cleaning your headlights, checking your tire pressure, and leaving yourself extra time to reach your destination.
But AAA Spokesman Jim Garrity says the most important thing to remember is leaving a safe distance between you and other cars.
"When you're in those moments where the roads are slippery, the snows starts coming down, the first thing you want to do is slow down and try to extend the distance between and the car in front of you. When the roads get bad like that, anything can happen. They can happen to the car in front of you. You want to give yourself plenty of stopping distance," Garrity said.
Other helpful tips include keeping anti-freeze in your engine and in your windshield-wiper fluid.
Also, if you find yourself skidding, keep the steering wheel facing the direction you want to go.
Over-correcting can cause even more problems.
