A Goodyear high-school student was detained by police Friday for bringing explosive material to school after a fellow student reported suspicious behavior, police said.

The Desert Edge High School student had dangerous chemicals and an ignition device, Goodyear police spokeswoman Lisa Carlow-Kutis said.

After being detained, the student told a school police officer that he planned on detonating the device in the school's courtyard while classes were in session, she said.

A search that night of the student's home suggested he may have been testing or experimenting with explosive devices, Carlow-Kutis said.

"The evidence found (during the search indicated) he had every intention of causing some harm," she said. The teenager is not being named because he is a minor.

She commended the student who alerted Desert Edge staff around 10 a.m. about the dangerous situation.

"The key message is if you see something suspicious, report it," she said. "That's exactly what happened here. And it really avoided a very serious situation at school."

The student was arrested for misconduct involving weapons and disorderly conduct and was booked into the Durango Juvenile Detention Center in Phoenix, according to police.
