GENOA – No one was injured in a fire Saturday afternoon that damaged the garages at a two-unit duplex in the 700 block of Hawthorn Lane in Genoa.

Genoa-Kingston Fire Chief Bruce Kozlowski said firefighters contained the fire to the garages, but one of the residences was damaged by smoke.

"We made a good stop on it," he said. "It was going up the back wall of the garages, and we contained it in the attic."

Kozlowski said the American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the residents of the smoke-damaged unit.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but foul play is not suspected, Kozlowski said. A damage estimate was not available.

Firefighters were summoned at 2:16 p.m. to the scene after a report of smoke coming from the roof of the duplex.

In addition to the Genoa-Kingston Fire Protection District, firefighters from Sycamore, Kirkland and Marengo responded. The Maple Park and Huntley fire districts provided backup personnel and equipment at the Genoa-Kingston station.
