PLAINFIELD- A Canterbury woman was arrested on drunk driving charges after crashing into a parked car at the Plainfield Police Department and passing out behind the wheel of her car on Friday, police said.
According to a press release from the Plainfield Police Department, Chelsea R. Barber, 22, of Canterbury, was arrested for driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, driving under suspension, drinking while driving and evading the scene of an accident.
At 4:56 p.m. on Friday, an on-duty dispatcher at the Plainfield Police Department observed via surveillance footage a vehicle driving erratically in the department's parking lot, police said. According to the report, the dispatcher observed the vehicle drive across the front lawn, up the driveway, over a curb several times and hit an unoccupied vehicle while attempting to park in a nearby space.
After striking the vehicle, which belonged to an employee of the department, the vehicle exited the parking lot and headed northbound on Norwich Road, police said. Officials were able to discern the license plate number of the vehicle on the surveillance footage, the release said.
Police said they searched the area for the vehicle and located it parked behind a storage facility on 150 Norwich Road, where they also found Barber passed out behind the wheel with an open container of alcohol on her lap. Police said her car matched the vehicle in the surveillance footage and also determined damage to her vehicle to be consistent with the crash in the department parking lot.
She failed to pass a field sobriety test and was arrested, police said. Barber was released on $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Danielson Superior Court on Jan. 8.
