Rise of the suburbs’ million-pound streets

MILLION-POUND streets were once mainly found in the priciest areas of London.

Now many areas of England and Wales boast houses with a seven-figure price tag, figures released today show.

Yorkshire and Humberside, Newcastle upon Tyne and Swansea now have homes worth at least £1million.

Overall, there are now at least 73 million-pound streets across England and Wales. The Lloyds Bank statistics, which used Land Registry sales figures, reveal that houses in Runnymede Road, Newcastle, fetch an average of £1.1million while those in Montagu Avenue go for a similar sum.

In the north of England, Congleton Road in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, is the most expensive street with homes selling for almost £2million.

Park Drive in nearby Altrincham has properties worth £1.8million. Fulwith Mill Lane in Harrogate has the most expensive homes in the Yorkshire and Humberside region at £1.5million on average.

In Ling Lane in Leeds they cost £1.1million.

In the West Midlands, properties in Roman Road, Sutton Coldfield, fetch about £1.4million and Widney Manor Road in Solihull prices average £1.3million.

Warren Hill in Newtown Linford, Leicester, is top in the East Midlands with house prices reaching £1.2million.

Weybridge in Surrey is home to three of the million pound streets – East Road (£5million), West Road (£4.5million) and Cavendish Road (£3.8million).

Oxfordshire and Dorset, including the millionaire’s favourite Sandbanks, also feature, with average house prices in some roads reaching £2million-plus.

In Wales, St Anne’s Close in Swansea takes the top spot with an average price of £1million, followed by Twyncyn in Dinas Powys at £813,000.

But, unsurprisingly, the most expensive streets are all in London’s Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea where the average price in some streets reaches £10million – and in some cases more than £16million. Grosvenor Crescent, Belgravia, is the priciest postcode.

A typical house in the crescent, which lies close to Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace, fetches nearly £17million on average. Eaton Square – last year’s most expensive street – has slipped to third place.

However average prices are still £13.5 million (down from about £17 million last year).

Andrew Mason, mortgage products director at Lloyds Bank, said: “Away from London, the survey shows that the most expensive streets are tightly clustered within Cheshire, Yorkshire and the Humber and Sandbanks in Dorset on the south coast.”
